چکیده

The saturation of the tearing mode in a plasma column is investigated in the framework of the resistive magnetohydrodynamics approximation. In particular, a perturbative procedure is adopted to evaluate the structure of the magnetic island in three relevant physical conditions, depending on the model for the evolution of the resistivity, which may be affected by the growth of the mode. In cylindrical geometry, which is well suited to describe a large-aspect-ratio, low-beta tokamak plasma, the magnetic island is asymmetric with respect to the magnetic surface where reconnection occurs. New relations for the saturated island width ws as a function of the relevant features of the equilibrium current density profile, i.e., its gradient and curvature at the reconnecting surface, are obtained. Finally, equivalent relations are also derived in the slab limit. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2375036

Gyrokinetic df simulation of the collisionless and semicollisional tearing mode instability

The evolution of collisionless and semicollisional tearing mode instabilities is studied using an electromagnetic gyrokinetic df particle-in-cell simulation model. Drift-kinetic electrons are used. Linear eigenmode analysis is presented for the case of fixed ions and there is excellent agreement with simulation. A double peaked eigenmode structure is seen indicative of a positive D8. Nonlinear ...

X-point collapse and saturation in the nonlinear tearing mode reconnection.

We study the nonlinear evolution of the resistive tearing mode in slab geometry in two dimensions. We show that, in the strongly driven regime (large delta'), a collapse of the X point occurs once the island width exceeds a certain critical value approximately 1/delta'. A current sheet is formed and the reconnection is exponential in time with a growth rate proportional eta(1/2), where eta is t...

Onset and Saturation of a Non-Resonant Internal Mode in NSTX and Implications for AT Modes in ITER

Motivated by experimental observations of apparently triggerless tearing modes, we have performed linear and nonlinear MHD analysis showing that a non-resonant mode with toroidal mode number n=1 can develop in the National Spherical Torus eXperiment (NSTX) at moderate normalized βN when the shear is low and the central safety factor q0 is close to but greater than one. This mode, which is relat...

Fast and Slow Nonlinear Tearing Mode Reconnection

1. Introduction. The standard theory of the tearing-mode evolution identifies three stages. The first is the linear stage described by the Furth–Killeen–Rosenbluth (FKR) theory [1]. During this stage, the island width W grows exponentially in time until it reaches the width of the resistive dissipation layer, ℓ η ∝ η 2/5 ∆ ′1/5 , where η is the resistivity and ∆ ′ is the instability parameter [...

Physical Properties of Parasitic Modes in Non-ideal Mhd Accretion Disks

We investigate the stability of incompressible, exact, non-ideal magnetorotational (MRI) modes against parasitic instabilities for a broad range of dissipation coefficients, relevant to astrophysical and laboratory environments. This allows us to uncover the asymptotic behavior of the fastest parasites in terms of the Elsasser number, Λη, when viscous effects are not important. We calculate the...
